When Do You Need to Replace Your Brake Rotors?
Brake rotors endure immense friction and heat. You should replace this rotor immediately if you or your maintenance crew notice any of the following warning signs:
  1. Vibration or Pulsing: If the brake pedal or steering wheel chatters or pulses violently when applying pressure, the rotor is likely warped from overheating.
  2. Severe Metal Grinding: If your brake pads wear down completely to the backing plates, the resulting metal-on-metal contact will score deep grooves into the disc surface, destroying the rotor instantly.
  3. Visible Cracking or Heat Spots: Inspect the face of the rotor. If you observe deep surface grooves, a heavy outer rim lip, cracks running through the metal, or dark blue/black hot spots, the steel's structural integrity has failed.
  4. Dropping Below Minimum Thickness: The absolute threshold for safety is mechanical measurement. If a micrometer shows the thickness is at or below the stamped limit on the hub face (Minimum Thickness: 2.76 inches / ~70mm nominal class parameters depending on the specific contract stamping), it is worn out and must be replaced.
