Lower Output Geared Hub Seal HMMWV
Seal Width= 0.485 in.
NSN #:5330-01-203-6551
Part #:12342961
This item (NSN 5330-01-203-6551, AM General Part #12342961) is the heavy-duty Lower Output Geared Hub Seal for the HMMWV/Humvee [3020-01-491-2671]. It is one of the most critical preventive maintenance parts on the entire vehicle because it keeps the geared wheel hub assembly functioning properly.
⚙️ What Does It Do?
Unlike conventional 4x4 vehicles where the axle goes straight into the center of the wheel, a Humvee utilizes Portal/Geared Hubs at all four corners to maximize ground clearance.
- Oil Retention: The lower half of each wheel hub houses a massive set of drive gears fully submerged in heavy gear oil. This specific seal is pressed into the lower steering knuckle housing to provide a tight, leak-proof barrier around the rotating main wheel spindle shaft.
- Environmental Protection: It features a dual-lipped rubber design that seals gear oil in while aggressively keeping mud, dust, sand, and deep water outduring off-road or tactical driving.
🔍 How to Identify It in a Workshop
If you are sorting through parts or trying to verify you have the correct component, look for these distinct design traits:
- The Steel Outer Ring: It is a "plain encased" seal, meaning the flexible rubber lip is permanently bonded inside a rigid, stamped steel outer shell. This steel ring is designed to be mechanically driven/pressed into the hub housing with an installation tool.
- The Spring-Loaded Lip: If you flip the seal over, you will see a small, circular "garter spring" wrapped tightly around the innermost rubber lip. This spring provides constant inward tension to keep the rubber pressed against the spinning spindle shaft.
- Dimensions: It has an overall thickness/width profile of exactly 0.485 inches.
⚠️ Common Signs This Part Has Failed
Because this seal handles constant rotational friction and is vulnerable to trail debris, it is a common wear item. You know it needs to be replaced if:
- You see a film of dark gear oil coating the inside face of your tire or wheel rim.
- Debris gets past the seal and chews up the rubber, causing the hub to slowly lose its fluid and eventually run dry, which will ruin the expensive internal drive gears.
